The value network approach recognises that "life" in an organisation consists of both formal and informal relationships and activities. It helps visualise how people or groups of people interact to create deliverables and represents people or role plays as ovals in the examples that follow. These examples show a mix of situations including:
- Entrepreneurial start -up
- Project management and business interactions including governance
- Board level interactions with Non Executive Directors (NEDs)
- Mature businesses like Cisco, Ebay
- Processes, including grooming businesses for sale, event management, personal "quantum collapse"
- Business ecosystems and the world's first economic model
Deliverables are shown as continuous lines if formally approved, mandated or expected.

However, most organisations do not work as the formal process or work flow indicates. The real situation is generally much messier. People interact informally, possibly through social networks, exchanging information of one form or another, or simply in providing a supporting presence. It is these "intangibles" that constitute the "glue" that binds an effective working group, however large or globally dispersed. The deliverables or exchanges of this unexpected, unmandated or non contractual nature are shown dotted in the above examples.
The real organisation or project is beginning to "stand-up," and reveal the real pattern of exchanges that are taking place. This is then co-developed to create quantum leaps in performance. Blockages in information flow, the perceived value of deliverables, the risk attached to creating or receiving them, costs and other metrics can all be investigated by those affected and new arrangements negotiated with knowledge of the impact on the bigger picture and all "customer touchpoints."
It is simple to use and provides a unique opportunity for people to co-create together, and generate commitment to necessary changes.
The value network method of visualisation thus leads directly into value network analysis - a dynamic diagnostic tool that reveals the hidden keys to co-creating outstanding results
